The Maryland Public Service Commission has established regulations for an innovative community energy pilot program designed to expand access to renewable energy across the state. This program allows customers to participate in the benefits of solar energy without the need for installing personal solar panels on their property.
Under this pilot program, customers can purchase a subscription to a portion of the energy generated by a Community Solar Energy Generating System (CSEGS) from an approved Subscriber Organization. These CSEGS installations are typically large-scale solar farms located within the community. They harness the power of the sun to produce clean, renewable electricity that is fed into the local power grid.
When a customer subscribes to a CSEGS, they are essentially purchasing a share of the system’s energy output. This makes it possible for residents, businesses, and organizations to participate in the solar energy movement, regardless of whether they own their home, have a suitable roof for solar panels, or live in an apartment. It democratizes access to solar energy and promotes wider adoption of renewable energy sources.
Once the subscription is active and the CSEGS is operational, the customer will receive a credit on their BGE (Baltimore Gas and Electric) bill for their share of the solar energy produced. This credit, known as a “Community Solar Adjustment,” is applied directly to the customer’s monthly utility bill, reducing their overall electricity costs. The amount of the credit is based on the proportion of energy generated by the CSEGS that the customer has subscribed to, providing a tangible financial benefit from the shared solar project.
Additionally, the community energy pilot program supports Maryland’s goals of increasing renewable energy usage, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and fostering local economic development through the creation of green jobs and investment in local solar projects.
By participating in this program, customers not only enjoy potential savings on their energy bills but also contribute to a more sustainable and resilient energy future for Maryland. It’s a win-win opportunity for individuals and communities alike, driving the state towards a cleaner, more sustainable energy landscape.
